A few weeks ago, Julio decided spontaneously that we would go to Yosemite for the weekend. Memorial Day weekend would be too expensive and too crowded, so we went last weekend instead. We left before 7 am. I thought, it’s only 3 1/2 hours away-no big deal. But, driving through windy, mountainous roads made it seem much longer and all but Sylvie and Julio got carsick. Poor Tessa even threw up in the car. We did eventually make it there and headed directly to Heach Heachey Dam. We had a picnic and the kids explored and climbed the boulders. Then we crossed the dam on foot and walked through this old railroad tunnel blasted out of the mountain. We started heading toward a waterfall, but found out it was a 2 hour walk away. Lucia was very disappointed that we couldn’t do the hike and cried the whole way back that we were “LOSERS! WAAHH!” It was amusing.
From there, we drove about 1 1/2 hours to the Mariposa Grove-the Sequoias. We did the shortest hike. The kids were more interested in the little creek along the trail than seeing the massive trees. Sylvie and Marco insisted on carrying long “walking sticks” and swinging them around almost hitting passersby.
After our walk through the Sequioas, we drove 1 1/2 hours to our hotel in Madera-just north of Fresno. It was a long, exhausting day. The kids were so wound up after dinner, they didn’t go to sleep until almost 11 pm. It was a fun day, but I think we would stay closer next time, even if it is a lot more expensive.
